Abstract:Coastal wetlands remove nitrogen via denitrification while emitting methane (CH4). This study reveals a linear correlation (R²=0.87) between CH4 emissions and denitrification rates in eutrophic wetlands. The denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) process, involving nitrite- and nitrate-dependent pathways, utilizesCH4 as a carbon source for nitrogen removal. Field experiments show tidal cycles drive nitrogen removal through physical interception (30% NOx⁻ diffusion) and microbial denitrification (90% NOx⁻ reduction). The coexistence of DAMO bacteria (Methylomirabilis) and archaea (Methanoperedens) highlights CH4-driven nitrogen cycling in coastal ecosystems.
