The International Forum on Ecological Civilization & the Second International Forum on Silk Road Development were held at Chenjiazhen, Chongming, Shanghai to present China’s solution with Chongming Island as the model to the world. More than 100 domestic and international experts and scholars in relevant fields attended the Forum. This Forum was co-organized by Institute of Eco-Chongming at East China Normal University, and International Silk Road Institute at Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. This Forum consists of two sub-forums centering on “Chongming’s yesterday, today, and tomorrow” and “silk road development” respectively.

Shijun Tong, Chair of the University Council, East China Normal University, and Chair of the Organizing Committee, made a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Forum on the morning of October 11. He pointed out that the year of 2018 marks the 5th anniversary of China’s green development philosophy as well as the One Belt One Road initiative, the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up, the 60th birthday of SASS, and the 1400th commemoration of Chongming Island’s rising to the surface. Moreover, ECNU’s “ecology plus” action was also unveiled in 2018, the year of which not only symbolizes a new start, but will also leads the way forward. East China Normal University will cooperate with all parties concerned and take advantage of the cluster of resources and strengths from multiple universities and institutions to contribute to the development of Chongming Island into a world-class ecological island.

On the scene of the Forum
At the sub-forum on ecological civilization organized by Institute of Eco-Chongming, East China Normal Unievrsity, a number of domestic and international renowned experts and scholars from the United States, Netherlands, Australia, Israel, Thailand, and many other countries as well were invited to attend the Forum. They all gathered at Chongming Island and had in-depth discussions on key issues related to the development of world-class ecological island. How to define a world-class ecological island? How can Chongming be developed into a true world-class ecological island? How shall universities and the industry contribute to the development of ecological islands? At the end of the Forum, experts at home and abroad proposed the establishment of “International Eco-Island Science Alliance”, exchanging ideas and offering suggestions for the sustainable development of world-class ecological island.
As an irreplaceable ecological resort and strategic conservation land for Shanghai, Chongming Island is an important ecological barrier and a model of green development in Shanghai. It is also a benchmark and model for environmental protection and ecological civilization of the Yangtze River Delta city group and the Yangtze River Economic Zone.
The Forum has built a platform for international exchanges and cooperation in the development of world-class ecological island, bringing international vision and global wisdom to Chongming and even the whole world in future development of world-class ecological island.
