To promote the development of Chongming Island into a world-class ecological island, Institute of Eco-Chongming, East China Normal University organized and hosted a forum on ecological civilization in which renowned experts and scholars from the United States, Netherlands, Australia, Israel, Thailand and other countries as well all gathered on Chongming Island to discuss the construction of world-class ecological island in the afternoon of October 12.
Forum on Ecological Civilization
At the forum, experts at home and abroad had lively discussions on the proposal of establishment of “International Eco-Island Science Alliance”, offering valuable and insightful suggestions to make preliminary plans for the future prospects and specific tasks of the science alliance. Participants in the forum all agreed to join this science alliance which is thought to be the world’s first scientific organization for the construction of eco-island, and is expected to announce its establishment on a famous international journal. The alliance’s headquarter will be at Institute of Eco-Chongming, East China Normal University.
Experts and scholars discussing the construction of world-class ecological island
According to Jianwu Tang, director of Institute of Eco-Chongming at ECNU, the scientific idea for this alliance is “fostering harmony between nature and human society, and leading towards sustainable ecological island”. International Eco-Island Science Alliance aims to establish scientific and technological support for the construction of world-class ecological islands. To be specific, the alliance will be dedicated to promoting international exchanges and cooperation in the field of ecological agriculture, ecological tourism, wetland protection, new energy, environmental pollution control, education, public awareness on the construction of world-class ecological island.

The initiative to establish “International Eco-Island Science Alliance” not only means that global scientists are about to launch substantial long-term cooperation in the research on the development of ecological islands which shall meet the urgent requirements for ecological civilization, but also signals that East China Normal University will gradually increase its international competitiveness and take the lead in the scientific fields of ecology and environmental protection.
