Adjunct Scientist Recruitment Announcement

Approved by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Institute of Eco-Chongming (IEC), an international research institution in ecology and geoscience, was established by East China Normal University as the leading unit, in collaboration with Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and the People's Government of Chongming District. IEC is supported by the “Island Atmosphere and Ecology” science under the Shanghai Class IV Peak Disciplinary Development Program.
IEC's mission is 1) to establish scientific, technological, and policy pillars to support sustainable development of Chongming to be a world-class ecological island; and 2) to establish an international research center for ecology and Earth system sciences. Based on the Chongming Island, IEC is committed to serving Shanghai and the nation, and impacting the world. Governed by international academic principles of free exploration, collaborative innovation, and interdisciplinary integration, IEC invites scholars, domestically and internationally, to join IEC as adjunct scientists. We offer a unique office environment on the scenic Chongming Island, and an access to the state-of-the-art instrumentation and modern laboratory facilities.
IEC encourages researchers to undertake original, explorative, and cutting-edge research in science and technology that meets national strategic needs and fills knowledge gaps by combining basic and applied research and striving to achieve significant advancement. Based on their expertise and disciplinary characteristics, adjunct scientists will have the opportunity to organize and leadresearch innovation teams, actively facilitate international cooperation and exchanges, and promote international recognition and competitiveness of IEC.
I Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
i. hold the highest standard of academic integrity;
ii. hold a PhD and have made outstanding contributions in relevant fields and professions;
iii. have made or have a potential to make an impact on their fields;
iv. hold appointments at accredited universities, colleges, or research institutions anywhere in the world;
v. be willing to work as an adjunct scientist (including adjunct professors, adjunct associate professors, adjunct assistant professors, adjunct postdoctors, adjunct research fellows, and adjunct engineers).
II Roles & Responsibilities
a. Adjunct scientists are required to conduct research at IEC or for IEC at their chosen working hours.
b. Adjunct scientists will be encouraged to apply for research funding domestically or internationally with IEC as the affiliation.
c. Adjunct scientists will be encouraged to present lectures, and host seminars and conferences at IEC.
d. Adjunct scientists will have opportunities to advise or co-advise doctoral or master students who conduct research at IEC.
e. Adjunct scientists will be encouraged to apply for various university, regional and national talent programs with IEC as their affiliation or home institution.
f. Adjunct scientists will have access to offices, labs, field and research stations managed by IEC, and apartments nearby during the working period.
g. All adjunct scientists are expected to comply with relevant policies, rules and regulations.
h. Salaries and research expenses during the research period at IEC will be negotiated by both parties according to relevant policies. Employment contract will be signed accordingly.
III Application Procedures
a. Fill out and submit Institute of Eco-Chongming Adjunct Scientist Application Form.
b. Submit copies of identity card or passport, degree certificates or diploma certificates, certificates of employment and titles, and samples of scientific achievements.
c. Applications will be reviewed and assessed by the Executive Committee of IEC. Upon approval, applicants will be awarded an official Letter of Appointment by IEC.
IV Appointment Management
a. IEC is responsible for the daily management of adjunct scientists. The length of tenure for adjunct scientists is up to three years, which shall automatically terminate at the end of that period, with the possibility of renewal if both parties reach consensus after negotiation.
b. Adjunct scientists are required to acknowledge and list IEC as their affiliated institution in their research outputs (including papers, achievements, patents, awards, etc.) which are resulted from conducting research at IEC.
c. For any violation of pertinent laws, policies, rules, regulations, academic standards and professional ethics, IEC has the authority to terminate his or her appointment.
